Through the Mud and the Blood is a set of wargames rules aimed specifically at large scale skirmish games in the Great War on the Western Front with between thirty and a hundred or so figures a side. The mechanisms are designed to produce an enjoyable and playable game which can also faithfully reproduce the tactics historically used.

I will first admit to something of a bias I really like this rules set & have yet to find a product by this company which I do not like. Getting down to the nity gritty its very playable with small forces, a couple of sections, yet quite capable of expanding to cope with over a company per side with supporting tanks &off board artillery it plays in a couple of hours which is fairly typical for a skirmish type wargame but the mechanics are so elegant & the choices at any one time so clearly laid out for you that you wont be bored or notice the time. It uses a card driven system to produce the best model of the variable bound I have yet seen with the initial manurer part of the action going at a good lick & then slowing as troops spot each other and come into conflict but all without over complex mechanics or pages of charts, or most importantly spoiling the flow of the game. The game works in pretty much any scale you would want to play it in thought it is worth noting that the rules are illustrated by 28mm figures throughout but that the ground scale is 15mm & I regularly play it in that scale with no alterations. I would warn you though that this is for all the minimalist rules and simple mechanics a simulation and a cruel one at that which will punish bad tactics & general foolishness horribly and without let up. You will also have to make your own card decks for your forces as all the decks are custom built & depend on what you have got in the force but this is not hard & the rules clearly list how to do it. The game is well supported on line with an active yahoo group & numerous blogs & there is a scenario book avalible, sadly PDF only with another for the eastern front in the works.
